Educating girls was encouraged by the populace by the 20th century in sri Lanka. However getting them to learn English along with Buddhism was very remote as there were no English Buddhist schools in sight for the parents of Galle. In 1919 Mr. Francis Amarasiri Wickremesingha who was a Mohundiram at that time , brought forward the concept of getting the English education to Buddhist girls. Hence Sanghamitta Vidyalaya was established with 14 girls at Oroppuwatta in Waliwatta Galle...
